Cisco 12000 Series Routers

The Cisco router 12000 Series represents the industry's most intelligent portfolio of routing solutions that scale from 2.5Gbps/slot to 40G/slot capacity service-enabling carrier IP/MPLS core and edge networks worldwide.

This proven portfolio leverages state of the art silicon and software technologies, delivering uncompromising routing performance, unparalleled QoS capabilities, comprehensive high availability support, ATM/Frame transport and an integrated core and edge feature set.

The Cisco 12810 Router offers highest density and most operationally efficient 40 Gigabit system for IP/MPLS networks in the industry, delivering 800 Gbps switching capacity in a 10-slot, 1/2-rack system. Existing Cisco 12410 systems can be field upgraded to Cisco 12810 40G/slot capacity.

Various Models and Capacity

Important Features:
Cisco I-Flex design--A portfolio of shared port adapters (SPAs) and SPA interface processors (SIPs) that prioritize voice, video, and data services so you can meet your customers' diverse service needs and stringent service-level agreements.

Advanced silicon and software technologies, for high standards of routing performance and QoS
Comprehensive high-availability support to help avoid planned and unplanned network downtime
Integrated core and edge feature set, supporting a wide range of business and consumer services
Fully upgradable modular switch fabric and Cisco IOS XR Software upgrade capability, to protect investments and reduce total cost of ownership.

Cisco XR 12000 and 12000 Series Product Portfolio Overview

This portfolio of routers delivers capacity and services with its fully distributed forwarding architecture and high-efficiency crossbar switch fabric. The combination of a centralized scheduler and unique virtual-output-queuing (VOQ) technology is aimed at maximising the use of the switch fabric bandwidth, minimizing latency, and providing non-blocking performance.

Cisco uses the latest in high-performance application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology to provide line-rate forwarding with an extensive feature set, while maintaining the strict control of jitter and latency required for real-time services.

Offering a comprehensive set of quality-of-service (QoS), IP/MPLS, and high-availability features, the Cisco XR 12000 Series and 12000 Series routers can help ensure maximum bandwidth usage and traffic differentiation while meeting even the strictest customer service-level agreements (SLAs).

The Cisco XR 12000 Series and 12000 Series routers use Cisco IOS XR Software and Cisco IOS Software, respectively, to deliver numerous service possibilities for network operators. With the addition of the Cisco XR 12000 Series to its high-end routing product lines, Cisco gives providers a graceful upgrade path for their installed base of Cisco 12000 Series routers as they transition toward a converged Cisco IP Next-Generation Network infrastructure.

Scaling the Cisco 12000 Series to Support the Largest Network Infrastructures

The Cisco PRP-1 has the memory capacity to support more than 1 million routes, providing extensive headroom to address the largest public and private applications well into the future.

The Cisco PRP-1, with its advanced Power PC processor, has the performance to support the fastest route convergence necessary for gigabit and terabit routing applications. The Cisco PRP-1 calculates and updates the routing table and all other control plane activities, including:
  • Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing updates
  • Layer 2 "keepalive"
  • OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP calculations
  • Automatic Protection Switching/Multiplex Section Protection (Packet over SONET [POS] line cards)
  • High availability features such as Hot Standby Router Protocol/Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (HSRP/VRRP), Route Processor Redundancy Plus, Cisco NSF, and Cisco SSO
KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS
  • The Cisco PRP-1 is the default route processor in Cisco's 12000 family of routers
  • Establishing a new benchmark in IP routing convergence for gigabit and terabit routing applications.
  • Supporting more than 1 million routes, providing extensive headroom to address the largest public and private applications of today and tomorrow.
  • An enhanced switch fabric interface greatly increasing the rate at which BGP and Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) updates are transmitted to neighboring routers.
The industry's most complete high availability feature set ensures maximum service availability:

– Cisco NSF
– Cisco SSO
– Redundant Route Processor Plus
– HSRP/VRRP
– Non-service impacting online insertion and removal (OIR)
– MPLS-Fast reroute (MPLS-FRR)
– Dynamic Packet Transport-Intelligent Protection Switching (DPT-IPS)
– Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) Automatic Protection Switching (APS)
– Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) Multiplex Section Protection (MSP)

The Cisco 12000 Series Router is part of Cisco's family of multimillion packets-per-second (pps) IP and MPLS routing platforms for building profitable networks in today's communications economy.

The Cisco 12000 Series is the premier high-end routing platform for service provider backbone and edge applications, enabling service providers to meet the challenge of building packet networks to satisfy services demand while increasing profitability.

The Cisco 12000 Series offers the only portfolio of 10 Gbps per slot systems and interfaces (including POS, Dynamic Packet Transport/Resilient Packet Ring [DPT/RPR], and Gigabit Ethernet [GbE]), delivering 10G economies of scale anywhere in the network.

The Cisco 12000 Series provides the highest reliability, the richest set of service enablers, the lowest total cost of ownership, and the only proven investment protection, including systems that can be upgraded in the field to increase switching capacity.

This innovative combination of features and capabilities enables service providers to build the most competitive IP and MPLS networks.
